THE MOST SPECTACULAR REGIONS IN FRANCE 

Explore one of the most beautiful regions of France and, arguably, all of Europe. This region has inspired many great artists including Vincent Van Gogh, it is also famous for its exceptional wine. Provence owes much of its infrastructure to the Romans, who founded the settlements that have developed into many of the region's most famous towns and cities.

STOP ONE

Spend a day in Arles, Provence

Provence or 'Gallia Optima', is one of the oldest regions of France, dating back to Phoenician and Greek colonists who founded a settlement at Marseilles.

Arles is a former Roman colony under Julius Caesar and grew under the emperor Augustus, visit great monuments from that era such as the amphitheater. 

 

Not to be missed by art lovers is the church of St Trophime, on the town square, whose portal and cloister are jewels of late Southern Romanesque Art. Learn about Van Gogh and visit the places that inspired him to paint some of his most well-known works such as  Starry Night over the Rhone.

St Remy de Provence

Here we will explore the Roman settlement of Glanum, including Roman aqueducts, bridges, and monuments.

After, we will Visit the surroundings of Saint-Paul Asylum, since renamed the Clinique Van Gogh, where Van Gogh recuperated during one of the most productive periods of his artistic career.  Explore the landscape that inspired him to create Saint-Rémy, a collection of paintings that he made when he was a self-admitted patient at the Saint-Paul asylum.

Nimes, City of Art and Culture, through the Ages

.Provence

Visit, and learn about, the beautiful, awe-inspiring, 'Pont de Guard', which is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century AD. It helped carry water over 31 miles (50 km) to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes). Be amazed by its height! It is in fact the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges, and one of the best-preserved. In 1985, it was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.

Next, we will visit Orange, which was a miniature version of Rome 2,000 years ago! Roman Orange was founded in 35 BC by veterans of the second legion. 

 

Learn about the history of the city, named after Arausio, the local Celtic water god. named after Arausio (the local Celtic water god). A major battle, which is generally known as the Battle of Arausio, was fought in 105 BC between two Roman armies two and the Cimbri and Teutones tribes. The town prospered but was sacked by the Visigoths in 412.

Spend your final day exploring the magnificent city of Nimes, which has been inhabited since the Neolithic times. It is home to some of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters and temples in the world. In fact, Nimes is dubbed the most Roman city outside Italy! It was once a regional capital of the Roman Empire home to 50,000–60,000 people.

There are several well-preserved famous monuments to discover, such as the Arena of Nîmes and the Maison Carrée.
